Just weeks after the Mulund police nabbed organisers and participants of a horse-cart race from the Eastern Express Highway on December 2, officials from Dahisar police station, too, rescued 10 horses and seized five carts on Thursday night.

Sources claimed the illegal race had already been rigged by bookies, who had accepted multiple bets. Police officials said all the arrested participants are horse-cart operators at Juhu, who participate in such races that are held on the Western Express Highway (WEH) every day.

Acting on a tip-off received by DCP (Zone XII) Punjabrao Ugale that an illegal horse-cart race had been organised from Kandivli (West) to Mira Road check naka, cops laid a trap on the WEH and arrested the accused. But, Ugale said, the bookies managed to escape. He added that the unidentified bookies had rigged the race and promised the winner a cash prize of Rs 20,000.
The fixing was done at 8 pm near Saidham temple, where all the participants had gathered with their horse-carts. A police official from Dahisar police station said, "All the arrested accused were booked under Sections 289, 279, 336 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. The horses used for the race were mistreated and harmed."
