Our relief has been short-lived. The BMC has brought back the 20% water cut, which it had rolled back just last month after reservoirs in the city overflowed following heavy rain.
The cut will be imposed in the city for 10 days for the commissioning of an underground tunnel work between the Bhandup water complex and Kapurbawadi.
According to officials from the BMC's hydraulics department, the water cut came into effect today. The regular supply of water will be restored by September 2.
"Those living in high rises and at the fag end of [water[ distribution network will face a little more problem as the water pressure will be less in comparison with what it used to be on normal days," said a senior engineer from the department.
The dry days
According to a release issued by the BMC headquarters last week, the water cut will be in force on August 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31 and September 1.
The city receives a majority of its water from Upper Vaitarna and Tansa.
The water released from these lakes is directly sent to the Bhandup water treatment plant - the area where the commissioning of the new tunnel work was set to begin today.
BMC optimistic
The BMC is hopeful that once the now underway pipeline repair work is completed, the supply of water to the city will increase to nearly 4,000 MLD.
"Laying new pipelines, and undertaking repair works will help curb leakage in supply lines," an official from the water department said.
