A letter allegedly sent from Powai police claims internal investigation report has not been submitted despite repeated reminders; Powai police say they never sent the letter
Powai police are not only investigating the illegal kidney transplant racket at Hiranandani Hospital, but have one more task on their plate - to investigate a fake letter that claims that the report of the internal investigation that was to be done by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) on three more doctors hasn't been submitted, despite repeated reminders, and this is slowing down the police investigation in the kidney transplant racket case.
On Friday evening, a letter addressed to the DHS from Powai police station was given to a few reporters. It claimed that the DHS is not submitting the report of the internal investigation that was supposed to be done on three more doctors who are under scanner for illegal kidney transplants.
'Not our letter'
BK Mahadeshkar, senior police officer, Powai police station said, "I have seen the letter but it is fake. It hasn't been sent from our police station, as it doesn't have any signature of our official or seal of our police station."
"We have received the first report of the investigation and will soon receive the second report. We will now investigate the matter to know the source of the fake letter," he added. Currently, DHS is investigating three more doctors - Suwin Shetty, Veena Sewlikar from Hiranandani Hospital, as well as B Kadam, the government representative who was part of the authorisation committee that approved the illegal kidney transplants in the hospital.
As per the letter, Powai police station, which is investigating the kidney transplants in the hospital, has sent six letters to DHS, asking for the report of the internal investigation on the doctors. But so far, DHS hasn't submitted any report and this is hindering their investigation.
DHS report delayed
However, sources close to the police station say that the letter is not fake. "DHS was supposed to submit the second report 15 days back but hasn't done it yet. It is slowing down the investigation so the letter was sent," said the source. A DHS official also refuted the allegations. "We are investigating the matter. We are getting delayed as more doctors are coming under the scanner. But we will submit the second report soon. However, we haven't received such a letter from the police," he said.
