Asia's largest agricultural wholesale market, the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) in Vashi, is flooded ue to heavy rainfall

Mumbai: Asia's largest agricultural wholesale market, the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) in Vashi, is flooded due to heavy rainfall.

Ever since the rains have lashed the satellite city, strolling in APMC has become a nightmare. As per the traders, flooding inside the market is a common scene every year. Despite paying huge taxes the drainage system goes for a toss during monsoons, they added.

On Thursday, roads and entry gates of the grain and vegetable market were deep under the water. Suppliers and customers had a difficult time moving inside the market.

"I come here to buy vegetables for my business purpose. However, it becomes very difficult to carry the purchase and walk inside the blocks of the market where water accumulates after heavy showers. The entry points are worst as they are flooded with knee deep water," said Ramdas Bangar, a retailer.

The APMC market is spread across 70 acres of land and has 3700 godowns, 1500 commercial blocks and has five major wholesale markets including fruits, vegetables, grains, spices and onion-potato.
