7 injured, as speeding truck rams school bus at Palm Beach Road

The heavy vehicle, which was heading towards Uran, rammed into the bus on Palm Beach Road while it was taking a right turn at an intersection


A routine early-morning ride to school took a dangerous turn for students of Nerul-based Podar International School yesterday, when a truck rammed into their school bus near Akshar Chowk on Palm Beach Road.


The truck was carrying a consignment of flowers towards Uran from Dadar, when it hit the bus while taking a right turn at an intersection

The accident occurred around 6.45 am, when the truck, which was speeding, rammed into the bus from behind, injuring seven children. The driver of the truck, identified as Ramu Reddy (28), fled the spot soon after the accident but was later nabbed by the police.

His co-passenger, 36-year-old Sarad Gade, sustained injuries on his leg and is receiving treatment at the D Y Patil Hospital in Nerul. The injured school children were treated at MGM Hospital in Vashi. Doctors at the hospital revealed that the children had sustained minor bruises.

They were given basic treatment and released soon after. "The truck was carrying a consignment of flowers towards Uran from Dadar, when it hit the bus while taking a right turn at an intersection. The truck was speeding and rammed into the bus," said PSI S M Bendre from NRI police station in Seawoods, who is investigating the case.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the school confirmed that the students had escaped with only minor injuries. The authorities added that the school plans to counsel the affected children and also conduct a training session for the transport staff. The driver of the pick-up truck has been booked under Section 279 of the IPC for rash and negligent driving.
