More than 55 per cent of the adult population in Navi Mumbai has received the first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine. Amid the vaccine shortage, private hospitals and corporate drives came to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's (NMMC) aid. Of the total vaccination, more than 60 per cent has been done privately.

The city currently has 59 centres with a capacity to inoculate more than 20,000 people daily. "We wanted to vaccinate everyone aged over 45 years by July end. The shortage of supply has hit the drive but strategic vaccination has helped immunise people from different strata of society. Since supply is low, we are focussing more on people waiting for the second dose," an NMMC officer said.

For over a fortnight, only the second dose is being given to residents, while those wanting the first dose are going to private hospitals. The city has around 11 lakh people eligible for vaccination.

"To reduce the impact of waves, vaccination and rigorous testing are the only way. So far, we have managed to vaccinate more than 55 per cent of eligible Navi Mumbai residents with the first dose," said Abhijit Bangar, commissioner, NMMC.
