A 41-year-old interior designer allegedly raped a 25-year-old woman repeatedly, after convincing her that he had divorced his wife. He also forced the woman to undergo two abortions
The 41-year-old accused, identified as Deepak Vibhakar Alhart, has now been arrested by the Chembur police. According to the cops, Alhart raped the woman repeatedly since October 2012, after they met through a common friend. Police Inspector Subhash Khanvilkar from Chembur police station said, "The woman was first raped in Panchgani, where the accused had invited her to attend celebrations of his 14-year-old son's birthday.
She was hesitant, but the accused told her to think that she was already married to him, and forced her into sex. After the Panchgani incident, the woman conceived, after which Alhart forced her to undergo an abortion." The woman, who used to live in a hostel in Mumbai, was thrown out of the accommodation after knowledge of her relationship became public. Alhart then offered to let her stay at his place, since his wife had left the house after a row. The pair soon started living together.
The woman conceived again and she was forced into an abortion yet again by Alhart. "His wife soon came to know that he was living with a woman. The accused evicted her from his home immediately. He started ignoring her. When the woman approached him near his residence, the accused pretended not to know her. He later warned her not to speak to anyone of their relationship," said Khanvilkar.
An FIR was registered with Chembur police station on Dec 29, and Alhart was arrested. He has been booked under sections 376 (rape), 315 (acts done with intent to prevent child from being born), 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. Alhart has been remanded in police custody till January 4.
