The Nagpada police arrested a youth last week for extorting money from family members of a duo arrested in a gang rape case last month. Julfikar Shaikh (26) and Parvez Shaikh (20) were arrested on December 22 for raping a Nepali woman in the city. They were given a life sentence and have been sent to Taloja Jail in Thane district.
According to police, Mohammad Rustam Mohammed Ali Hasan Shaikh (24) was duping family members of the accused, by telling them he had contacts with senior police officials which he could use to reduce their punishment and bail them out. Rustam, a labourer in a bag-making mill at Kamathipura, had already taken Rs 10,000 and was asking for another Rs 20,000 from both families. The complainant, Iskramuddin Mohammad Ansar Shaikh (Parvez's uncle), was hesitant initially but Rustam kept convincing him.u00a0
Iskramuddin finally agreed to pay in order to see his nephew bailed out safely. "On January 8, Rustam called me and Estikar (Julfikar's brother) outside my mill in Kamathipura and asked us to pay him. After a long discussion, we agreed to pay the desired amount but requested him to give us a few days to collect Rs 20,000," Iskramuddin said. On January 12, Iskramuddin filed a complaint and the police decided to lay a trap to catch Rustam red-handed. They asked family members to call Rustam to give him the remaining amount in Arabia restaurant in Nagpada.
"Iskramuddin filed a complaint on Saturday morning after which we asked him to call Rustam to Arabia restaurant," Senior Police Inspector Vinayak Savade from Nagpada police station said. "We were successful in arresting the accused and have also recovered Rs 10,000 paid as first instalment." The accused has been booked under section 384 (punishment for extortion) of the IPC, was produced in court and has been remanded in police custody.
