Disappointed with her exam results, Nikita Balkrishnan, a student of Masters in Computer Application from SIES College decided to end her life by jumping from a running train on Wednesday morning
Dealing with exam stress can be tough but overcoming failure can be even more challenging. Such was the case for 22-year-old Nikita Balkrishnan who appeared for her Masters in Computer Application (MCA) examination from SIES College of Management studies in Nerul.
When the MCA results were announced online on Monday morning, Nikita found that she had failed in one subject. Unable to accept failure, she decided to take the extreme step of ending her life by jumping from a speeding train between Kharghar and Kamothe.
On Tuesday, Nikita left home at 12 noon. When she did not return even at 10 pm, her worried father lodged a missing person complaint with the Nerul police station. Nikita sent a text message to her father that night telling him that she is going to take her own life for not being able to score better.
On receiving the message, her parents searched high and low that night for her. They could not get through as her phone was unreachable. She was found lying unconscious on the tracks by her father at around 10:30 am the next day and was declared dead before reaching the hospital.
"On Monday morning she got her MCA results in which she had failed in one subject. The next day in the afternoon she left home and did not return. I received her message at night after which I registered a missing persons complaint," said Shekaran Balkrishnan, the victim's father.
"She was brought by her dad and relatives at 11.10 am. She had already died before arriving at the hospital," said Dr Shridhar Varude from MGM Hospital.
The girl's body has been sent to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation for post-mortem. A case has been registered at the CBD Belapur police station. "We are waiting for the post-mortem reports after which we will investigate this case," said PSI Shinde Sharad Narayan.
