Security in Badlapur on Wednesday was beefed up as Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress leaders arrived there a day after a massive protest over the alleged sexual assault of two toddlers.

Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare, accompanied by a large crowd of women, was protesting outside the police station over Badlapur sexual assault case on Wednesday. 

Congress leader Nana Patole also visited the city a day after protestors stormed on railway tracks and staged a rail roko demonstation for nearly 10 hours.

Following the Badlapur sexual assault case, several people on Tuesday staged a protest which later turned violent with the police having to resort to lathi-charge. Incidents of stone-pelting were also reported. 

The stone-pelting during the protest injured at least 17 city police personnel and around eight railway police personnel.

Following the protest, internet services in Badlapur were suspended while large deployments of police were spotted across city to maintain the law and order situation.

The shops across the city were shut on August 21 and the roads too seemed rather deserted. Most schools in the city were shut too. 

Concurrently, part of the Special Investigation Team formed to probe Badlapur sexual assault case arrived at the city police station to condut further investigation. The SIT was formed by Maharashtra government. 

Last week, the local police arrested a school sweeper for allegedly sexually assaulting two toddlers, aged three and four, in a renowned school. 

The police arrested the accused on August 17 and he is currently remanded to police custody which has been extended till August 26. As per the complaint, he abused the girls in the toilet of the school.

In the wake of the Badlapur sexual assault, the school management suspended the principal, a class teacher and a female attendant. 

Concurrently, the Maharashtra government ordered suspension of three police officials including a senipr police inspector for alleged dereliction of duty. 

It was alleged that the police had not filed an FIR in connection with the Badlapur sexual assault case for 12 hours. Several Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders have also claimed that the school belongs to a BJP leader.
