Housemaids form an integral and inseparable part of our life. They make our life easier in more than one ways. But what happens when these same people turn their back on us. From stealing ornaments to murdering their owners, housemaids have made headlines for all the wrong reasons. If that's not fair there have been instances where things have been against them. From owners raping them to employers molesting their daughters and much more. We bring to you a few cases of crimes committed by housemaids and against them that have made headlines over the years.

Maid who robs on the first day of job arrested for the 30th time in Govandi:

On March 29, 2019, Vanita alias Aasha Shailendra Gaikwad, a 32-year-old thief was caught for the 30th time for robbing the home of a professor from a reputable Mumbai college back in January 2019. After being three months on the run, she was finally arrested from Govandi. Gaikwad's modus operandi was to rob her employers on the very first day on the job. The accused was arrested

Maid of man held in abetment of suicide case kills herself in Malad:

On March 11, 2019, an 18-year-old maid of a businessman committed suicide. She was arrested by the Malad police in the abetment of suicide of a 34-year-old woman in the year 2013. The deceased, identified as Kusum Kanojia worked as a maid in Harish Shekhawat's, house. At the time of the incident, Shekhawat's wife and their daughter were present in the house on the 10th floor in Kalpataru Pinnacle Tower. The 11-year-old daughter went to the kitchen for water and saw Kanojia hanging from the ceiling fan. Not finding any foul play, the police registered a case of Accidental Death Report (ADR).

Retired HC judge's house at Khar robbed, maid held:

On February 17, 2019, the Khar police arrested a 48-year-old maid, for allegedly robbing Rs 1.6 lakh from the residence of a retired judge of the Bombay High Court, at Khar. The accused was identified as Leena Laxman More, a resident of Santacruz. According to police, the family of the retired judge accused the maid of stealing the cash while they were out. The FIR reveals that the maid stole Rs 50,000, Rs 75,000 and Rs 35,000 from each cupboard of the house. The Khar police registered a case against her

Naval officer booked for 'molesting' domestic help in Goa:

On February 13, 2019, a 46-year-old senior naval officer posted in Goa was booked for allegedly molesting his domestic help. The maid filed a complaint of molestation and sexual harassment against Commodore Mankandan Nambiar, posted at the INS Hansa naval base in Panaji. The woman accused the officer of molesting her at his private residence in Vasco town. The officer was booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code

Housemaid arrested for theft at actor Moushumi Chatterjee's flat:

On January 6, 2019, a housemaid, identified as Sunita, was nabbed by the police for allegedly stealing gold from veteran Bollywood actor Moushumi Chatterjee's suburban residence in Khar. The maid was arrested when she was on her way to sell the stolen gold bangle. The case was solved within 24 hours of being registered. Sunita was charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code

Boyfriend's previous 'successful' murder gave maid idea to kill employers:

On June 22, 2018, the Khar police arrested Parvati Khakha and her boyfriend Singhasan Mukut Ekka who allegedly murdered Nanak Gopaldas Makhijani (84), and his wife Daya (82), in the wee hours of June 21 at their residence in Khar. The duo were arrested the same evening from Geetanjali Express in Nagpur while on their way to Odisha with the booty of Rs 10 lakh worth jewellery and Rs 9,000 cash.

Employer arrested for 19-yr-old maid's suicide from posh Jogeshwari high rise:

On June 27, 2018, the Meghwadi police arrested Nitin Khanna, the employer of the 19-year-old maid, for allegedly instigating her to commit suicide. The maid Jyoti Patekar, who was employed with the Khannas for over a year as a full-time maid, allegedly fell to her death from their apartment on the 18th floor of Oberoi Splendour at Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road. The maid's parents alleged that she was harassed and not paid and wanted to quit. The police booked the Khannas under relevant sections of IPC

Pervert arrested for molesting maid inside an elevator in Borivli:

On June 20, 2018, the Kasturba Marg police station arrested Navin Jagmohan Patel for allegedly molesting and trying to rob a 32-year-old woman maid inside the elevator of a high-rise building in Borivli East. The maid entered the elevator to go to her employer's residence when Patel got in and stood beside her. He allegedly began touching her hands and tried to hug her. As soon as the elevator stopped on the 12th floor, the survivor made a run for it, Patel tried to snatch her mangalsutra and mobile phone but was unsuccessful in doing so. Serial burglar maid arrested after sixteenth theft:

On January 30, 2018, Dindoshi police a domestic maid, a serial burglar for stealing jewelry and cash worth lakhs from a Goregaon family, where she worked for just a day. The accused identified as Narmada Shoeb Khan alias Bharati was named in 15 such cases before. The police learned of the theft when the family filed a case against an unknown person for decamping with jewelry worth Rs 22.85 lakh and Rs 32,000 in cash. Woman cheats house help of ornaments, cash:

On December 21, 2017, a woman from Malad was arrested for cheating her house help. The woman had taken 50 gm of gold from her house help in the name of making an investment. Investigations revealed that this was not the first house help she has cheated. 8-year-old house help, Laxmi Devendran filed a case against the 33-year-old woman, Patricia D'Souza for duping her in the name of investment and making a fake promise of returning twice the cost of the chain to her in a few months. Maid's son pockets shares worth Rs 1.28 crore from dead Parsi man:

On October 18, 2017, the Worli police arrested Devashish Ghosh, a resident of Grant Road  for hatching a criminal conspiracy and usurping Rs 1.28-crore from the senior citizen, who died 15 years ago. Ghosh, a maid's son managed to siphon Rs 1.28 crore from a Parsi senior citizen, by getting an aide to impersonate him. He even changed his name to appear a Parsi himself! Apparently, Ghosh's mother worked for the senior citizen and used to help him with his post - mails pertaining to bank accounts, statements, and demat accounts. Ghosh was booked under the relevant sections of IPC

Army sepoy nooked for molesting maid inside the lift:

On August 4, 2017, the Cuffe Parade police booked an Army sepoy for allegedly molesting a domestic worker at Navy Nagar. The 21-year-old, in her complainant, told cops that the accused touched her inappropriately inside the lift of the Brahmaputra building, where she works. In her complaint, she also mentioned that the accused was in his uniform when the incident took place. The police have registered a case under sections 354 A, 354 D and 343 of IPC

Maid mastermind behind a gang of housebreakers who splurged on dance bars:

On March 19, 2017, the Deonar police busted a gang of house breakers who used to rob houses so that they could splurge money at dance bars. This gang of four teenagers out of which three were minors was run by a lady who used to work as a maid in various houses. According to the police the gang leader identified as Vanita Mohan Patete, 38, was working as a maid in Shivajinagar, Deonar, and Mankhurd. The gang caught police's attention when a complainant identified as Ashish Kamble registered a theft complaint with Deonar police. Post which, the police informer found one of the boys throwing a lot of money in the dance bar. The police arrested the boy which led to her maid

55-year-old rapes woman under the garb of black magic:

On February 6, 2017, a 55-year-old house help was arrested for raping a 30-year-old maid by threatening to perform black magic on her. The accused had assured the maid nine months ago that he would help her reunite with her husband, who had left her, through black magic. Savita (name changed) befriended Yashwant Shelar, who also worked as house help in the same building. After she told him about her troubles, he told her that he knows black magic that can help change her husband’s mind. Shelar called Savita to an abandoned room and asked her to hold a lemon where he forced himself on her. Later, once again, he raped her and warned her not to speak about it to anyone. Post which, she lodged a complaint with the help of her mother

Director's wife booked for assaulting minor maid:

On January 10, 2017, a 17-year-old girl with bruises all over her body approached Bangur Nagar police station. The officers were in for a shock when the girl revealed that her employer, where she worked as a maid used to beat her up with an iron rod and hurt her private parts as well. The police arrested the 40-year-old woman Amruta Kaur Chawla under relevant sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act 2012 and Juvenile Justice Act

Con lawyers, maid caught trying to usurp Rs 4 crore house:

On December 21, 2016, Geeta Surve (43) who worked as a maid at those flats belonging to Mohan Narayan (42), a diabetic and a bachelor, who lived with his aged parents tried to unsurp two flats worth crores through forgery. She approached the HC and filed a testamentary suit (with the will) and her claim to establish her right over the property. The alert judge felt something amiss and directed the Mumbai police commissioner to probe the matter, which brought out the truth. A case was registered at Dadar police station and the four accused were arrested

Pervert arrested by Goregaon police for flashing at 7-year-old:

On December 01, 2016, Goregaon police arrested 28-year-old carpenter for flashing at a seven-year-old and her maid inside the elevator of a housing society. The arrested accused was identified as Shabbir Thakur Khan. As per the complaint, the girl’s maid decided to take her to her grandparents’ eighth-floor home when Khan, who had been coming to the building for some furniture work, too got in. The girl's father stared at the girl and then flashed at her. Both the girl and the maid were shocked and exited the elevator on the eighth floor. The scared girl ran to her grandmother and narrated the entire incident. Post which Khan was caught and beaten up by residents before being handed over to the police

65-year-old rapes minor daughter of the maid for six months:

On November 14, 2016, a 65-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping the daughter of his house help for more than six months. The shocking incident took place in Waliv, Vasai. The survivor (13) became pregnant and was in fact in her final trimester. As per the complaint, the accused is said to have fled to the US. The accused threatened the maid's daughter with dire consequences if she opened up about the assault on her. He even promised to take care of their medical expenses provided she didn’t register a complaint. In October, however, Martin and his family disappeared. The accused is on the run

Rogue driver gets maid pregnant, flees with her cash:

On August 22, 2015, a 30-year-old househelp, who works at an apartment in Neelamber Building on Peddar Road, lodged a rape complaint against a driver for allegedly raping her with the Gamdevi police. The driver, identified as Shatrukhan Juggeshwar Paswan, 32 and the maid worked in the same building when he overheard her confide in a friend that she was frustrated with her employer, he befriended her and offered to help her land a new job. He even promised to marry her. Later, she learned that he was already married. She found herself in a fix since as she was carrying his baby, and three months pregnant. When he denied to pay up for terminating the pregnancy, she requested her employer, an anchor in the entertainment industry, to lend her money. Paswan was booked for rape, breach of trust and criminal intimidation.

Sacked for being rude, maid steals Rs 1 lakh jewelry:

On October 22, 2011, a househelp was arrested by the police for stealing jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh. The woman's employment was discontinued due to her rude behaviour who then tried to avenge her sacking by robbing her employer’s ornaments. The accused identified as Prajakta Pawar had joined that job only two months ago. Her employer got fed up of her rude behaviour and her back-answers and hired another help. She then decided to exact revenge by stealing jewels. Pawar was booked and released on bail. The police also managed to recover all the stolen jewelry from the accused.

Playschool owner raped maid, wife tortured her:

On January 14, 2015, the Arnala Sagari police arrested the owner of a playschool for allegedly raping his 30-year-old help for several years. The man and his wife were also accused of subjecting the survivor to brutal torture. According to the survivor’s statement, the accused raped her on several occasions when he got drunk. The woman had over 200 injuries on her body. The accused was booked under various sections of IPC
