Trombay cops nab 2 for selling charas that washed ashore in Raigad

Trombay police have apprehended two individuals from Uran for allegedly selling charas that had washed ashore a month ago. A 26-year-old fisherman discovered the narcotic substance on the Uran shore and shared it with a friend, who confirmed its authenticity after tasting it. Both decided to sell it in the market and travelled to Mankhurd. However, when the police apprehended them with 1.5 kg of charas, they questioned the origin of the substance and subsequently recovered 6.4 kg of charas valued at Rs 30.22 lakhs from their hometown.

"We have arrested two individuals and seized 6.44 kg of charas valued at Rs 30.22 Lakhs from them. The accused informed us that they discovered these packets on the Raigad shoreline," stated Ravindra Ranshevare, Senior Inspector of the Trombay police station.

In August 2023, the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch unit arrested a man in his 30s who had arrived with 2 kg of the substance for sale. When questioned about its origin, he led the police to Ratnagiri, where he surrendered 8 kg of charas. He explained to the police that he had found packets on the seashore. This revelation prompted the Ratnagiri police to launch a search operation along the coast to locate additional such packets.

Approximately 500 kg of these packets had washed ashore in Ratnagiri, Raigad, and Gujarat. According to the police, a significant narcotics consignment must have accidentally fallen into the water or been deliberately discarded. The packets contained charas, and the plastic cover bore the inscription "Afghan and Pakistan Product".

On August 27, Trombay police received information that two individuals were coming to Mankhurd to sell narcotics. Senior Inspector Ravindra Ranshevare instructed Inspector Fareed Khan to conduct the operation. The team proceeded to Mankhurd and reached Maharashtra Nagar at midnight.

The team awaited at Patra Chawl, Maharashtra Nagar, and around 12:05 am, they observed an individual arriving on a motorcycle, parking nearby, and waiting with a white-coloured bag. "The informant pointed out the individual, and we apprehended him. The person was in possession of a packet he claimed to be charas," reported an official. The detained man identified himself as Mohammed Nadeem Idris Shah (30), a resident of Uran. The police found 1.598 kg of charas in his possession.

"When Shah was questioned about the source of the packet, he stated that Akshay Waghmare (26) had given it to him. He also mentioned that Waghmare was waiting at Vashi Octroi Naka at that moment. The police rushed to the location and apprehended Waghmare, recovering 2.130 kg of charas," explained another officer. During the interrogation, Waghmare informed the police that he had an additional 2 kg of charas in Uran. The team swiftly dispatched and recovered the packets from a chicken centre.
