A 28-year-old garment businessman from Thane, en route to the airport for a trip to Dubai, was reportedly duped of cash and foreign currency amounting to Rs 1.65 lakh by individuals posing as Income Tax (IT) officials, according to the police official.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, around 2 am, as the victim left Ulhasnagar via a cab to reach the airport for his foreign trip.
Upon reaching the Kharigaon toll naka in the Kalwa area, two individuals on motorcycles intercepted the cab, falsely claiming to be IT officials.
The individuals alleged that they had received information about the victim carrying US dollars illegally.

The victim during this interaction with them, the impersonators snatched 7,000 Dirhams and other cash totaling Rs 1.65 lakh from his pocket under the pretense of questioning him.
Later, two other individuals posing as accomplices of the impersonators arrived in a car and received the cash and foreign currency. The four perpetrators then fled the scene in the car and on the motorbike.
The victim had to cancel his Dubai trip and lodged a police complaint against the four individuals, identifying one of them as a resident of Ulhasnagar.
According to the police officials, based on the filed complaint, the police registered a case against the identified and three others under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 170 (personating a public servant), 420 (cheating), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
"An ongoing investigation is being conducted into the matter," the police official added.
Meanwhile, Police have unearthed cannabis cultivation on about 20 acres of farm land in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district and seized more than 10 quintal of the contraband worth nearly Rs 30 lakh, officials said on Thursday.
The cannabis plants were grown between cotton and tur crops in six different farms spread over 20 acres in Ghonsara and Bargwadi villages in Mahagaon taluka, they said.
