Even as traffic cops warn of spike in such incidents as checks have lost intensity, 3 deaths in six days worry authorities ahead of party season

The car hit a pedestrian and then a parked bus

Drink driving left three people dead in two separate accidents in the northern suburbs in the past week. The latest accident took place on Wednesday night where two people, including a pedestrian, died after a speeding car crashed into a parked bus at Gorai Road, Borivli West. The deceased have been identified as Prashant Barekar, 45, the pedestrian, and Abigail Jadhav, 21, who was in the backseat of the car.

Four people have sustained injuries and one of them is in critical condition and is on ventilator support at KEM Hospital. According to Borivli police, Rohit Mukherji, Jatan Joshi, Aditya Manvacharya, Gideon Varkhede, Rion Pereira and Abigail Jadhav were returning in a car after celebrating Aditya's birthday.

Mukherji, who was driving the car, was drunk and lost control of the vehicle while speeding. The car hit Barekar, who was walking on the road. Barekar was thrown in the air due to impact and fell on the other side, dying on the spot. The car then hit a parked bus with high velocity. The other deceased, Jadhav, died due to severe head injury at Shatabdi Hospital while undergoing treatment.

Mukherji, however, was unharmed due to the airbag. Police have arrested him under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 337 (causing hurt due to rash, negligent act), 338 (causing grievous hurt), 279 (rash driving) of the IPC and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Speaking to mid-day, a police officer said, "The incident took place on Wednesday at 11.38 pm at Gorai Road near Maxus Mall. The youths were returning from a Gorai-based club party and were speeding." "We took their blood samples to confirm if they were drunk or not. We have booked and arrested the accused Rohit Mukherji," said Senior inspector Sudhir Kalekar from Borivli police station.

Pravin Padwal, additional commissioner of police, North Suburban, said, "Keeping the upcoming festival in mind, we are starting a special campaign of Drink and Drive. We are very strict about this, that is why in the two accidents that happened recently, we have booked the accused under section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide) of the IPC instead of section 304(a) (causing death by negligence).
