NCB Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede speaks to locals during the raid in Mahim on Saturday
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Saturday night arrested a peddler and counselled a few teenagers near the Mahim dargah.
Residents said they approached the NCB after not being satisfied by the local police station's action. "Mahim police booked cases of consumption, but those are bailable and the main accused were never caught," said a resident. "They keep supplying drugs, especially to teenagers at Mahim beach. There has been some impact with the NCB's action but it is temporary. There needs to be strict police action."
Mahim Senior Police Inspector Vilas Shinde denied there had been any laxity. "We have been taking frequent action against drug peddlers and consumers. We have not received such complaints from locals and are unaware of the NCB raids as they did not inform us."
NCB Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede said they found dozens of teenagers aged between 12 years and 16 years. But the search yielded nothing, and they were handed over to their parents. The NCB later arrested Wasim Mohammed Shamim Nagor from Mahim beach with 101 grams of hashish worth R10 lakh. "Preliminary investigation revealed he was selling drugs to children and getting them addicted," said Wankhede.
