A case has been filed against a representative of a company in Maharashtra's Latur district for allegedly submitting bogus bank guarantees worth more than Rs 1 crore to the Panvel Municipal Corporation to get contracts for maintenance projects, according to police reports on Tuesday.
Between November 17, 2022, and February 26, 2024, the engineering firm was awarded contracts for the maintenance, repair, and renovation of all public toilets within the Panvel Municipal Corporation limits, as well as the repair and renovation of sewage pipelines in Navi Mumbai's Kharghar area, according to a Panvel town police official, reported PTI.
According to the report, the contracts required the company to provide bank guarantees of Rs 1,32,63,229 to the corporation. However, when the local authority verified the bank guarantees, it determined that they were false, according to the official.
Following a complaint reported by the civic body's sanitation department chief, a case was filed on Monday against the company's representative under several sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with cheating and forgery, according to the official, the report added.

An investigation is currently underway to obtain additional details and determine the scope of the alleged fraudulent activity, the PTI report further stated.
Meanwhile, in another incident, cops arrested two men for illegal slaughter and transportation of cattle meat in the Thane district, an official told PTI on Tuesday. Per the agency report, cattle slaughter in the state is a punishable offence under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 1995.
A Kongaon police station official told PTI that a police team checked a tempo at Rajnoli Naka on the Nashik-Mumbai road based on suspicion. After the searches, the cops detected that the two arrested accused were trafficking approximately 500-600 kg of cattle flesh. the incident happened on February 24.
The accused persons, according to the PTI report, have been arrested under Sections 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc.) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act.
Concurrently, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested a deputy superintendent and accountant with the office of land records in Palghar district for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 30,000, an ACB personnel told PTI.
