Navi Mumbai: 4 booked for siphoning off Rs 65 lakh by promising discounts on luxe phones, cars

Police have filed a case against four individuals for allegedly defrauding five Navi Mumbai residents of Rs 65 lakh by promising them discounts on luxury cars and mobile phones, police personnel said on Tuesday, According to an official, the defendants pretended to be workers at a reputable business.

The accused persons had lured the victims to invest substantial amounts of money with a promise of getting them expensive mobile phones and cars at discounted rates through company coupons in 40 days, an official from Navi Mumbai's Kamothe police station told news agency PTI.

Reportedly, the victims had collectively invested Rs 65.73 lakhs in a period between August 2023 and January 2024 to avail the luxe goodies.

The victims realised they were conned when the accused failed to deliver the goods as promised and gave evasive responses, the PTI report stated adding that one of the victims, a 34-year-old woman entrepreneur, approached the Kamothe police.

The report added that Navi Mumbai police on Monday booked the four accused, including a couple from Mumbai, under Sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Meanwhile, in another incident of fraud, a Navi Mumbai resident was duped of Rs 5 lakh. Reportedly, the man was sold phoney gold coins.

A report in PTI quoted a Navi Mumbai Police official saying that a woman, her son and another person were booked for allegedly cheating the 41-year-old Navi Mumbai resident.

According to the report, the accused, who is a resident of Mumbra, initially won the victim over by selling him actual gold coins earlier this month.

The official from Kharghar police station then added that the trio later convinced him to buy more of the gold coins and siphoned off Rs 5 lakhs by giving him fake gold coins instead.

Upon realising he was duped, the man approached Mumbra police who transferred the matter to their Kharghar counterparts, PTI report read.

The report added that the Kharghar police registered a case against the accused persons under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 34 (common intention).
