The suspect with the baby girl as caught in a CCTV footage
A three-and-a-half-month old girl was kidnapped by a woman, who posed as a hawker selling utensils in exchange for old mobile phones, from Kalachowki on Tuesday. The police have formed seven teams to look for the child and found CCTV footage where the accused is seen with the child. "It has been over 30 hours, I don't even know if my baby was given food or not," the child's father Bajrang Magdum told mid-day.
According to the police complaint, the incident took place around 12 noon when the child and her mother Sapna were alone at home. A hawker came to their house, offering utensils in exchange for old mobile phones. When Sapna went inside to get the phone, the accused approached her from behind and covered her nose with a cloth, making her unconscious. The accused then fled with the girl.
"I had gone out for a while when this happened. I trust the Mumbai police and they are looking for my girl," said the girl's father. Bajrang added that another hawker had come the day before, but Sapna had told her to come the next day as she was busy at the time.
DCP Vijay Patil told mid-day, "We have filed a case and formed seven teams to trace the girl. We are checking CCTV footage from the area as well as the railway station near the girl's house. The Crime Branch has also launched a parallel probe in the case."
An officer from Kalachowki police station said, "We are interrogating women in the city who give utensils in exchange for old clothes, mobiles and watches. We are also using the CCTV grab to identify the accused. So far, we have questioned over 250 people. We have also traced the woman who had visited their house on Monday and are questioning her." Police are questioning the hawker, who had come on Monday, about the case to find out how the kidnapper learnt that the girl's mother was looking to buy utensils, but no link has been established so far. Police suspect more people were involved in the case.
