Mumbai: Thief escapes from lock-up of police station at Mira Road

A 30-year-old man escaped from the lock-up of Naya Nagar police station in Mira Road under the pretext of visiting the toilet, barely a few hours after his arrest on Monday.

The accused thief identified as Sameer Akbar Shaikh is a resident of Malwani area in Malad. He was arrested for allegedly committing theft at a temple. He escaped by removing the grill of the toilet window in the police station, stated a report in Mumbai Mirror.

Reportedly, Shaikh used the duct pipe to scale down from the toilet located on the first floor of the police station. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, following which three teams have been fanned out to trace the accused, a police officer told a news agency.

Shaikh was arrested for allegedly committing theft at a temple and booked under sections 457 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) and 380 (theft in a dwelling house etc) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
