A 37-year-old woman and her infant, both members of a Mahim-based family, died after the tyre of their car burst and they hit a truck on their way to Gujarat on Saturday afternoon.
Six other members of the family were injured and are undergoing treatment, said Kasa police. Ayan Shaikh, a family member who was driving the car has been booked for causing death by negligence.
The Sheikh family, resident of Haji Ismail Chawl in Mahim, had left for Vapi in Gujarat on Saturday afternoon to attend a wedding.
As they entered Palghar on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway around 2 pm, the tyre of their Eco car burst. Ayan, who was at the wheel, lost control and rammed the car in the rear of a truck moving ahead.

The impact of the accident was such that Nazneen Sheikh and her 1-year-old died on the spot. Six others including Ayan were rushed to Kasa hospital and are undergoing treatment.
"The family was going to attend a wedding in Vapi on Saturday night. The accident occurred when the vehicle was passing over Susari river near Dhanivari village. We have booked Ayan under IPC section 304 A (death caused by negligence)," an officer from Kasa Police station said.
