A 30-year-old man's attempt to kill his girlfriend by setting her on fire backfired terribly when the woman suddenly rushed towards him and held on to him tightly while on fire, leading to the man's death. The woman's condition is critical, as she is currently undergoing treatment for the 80 per cent burns she received in the incident. The macabre scene played out while the accused was standing at the door of the victim's house at Jogeshwari East in Gandhi Nagar and watching her scream for help, while she burned.

According to sources from Meghwadi police station, deceased Vijay Khambe was having an affair with his sister-in-law's younger sister (victim) for the last two-and-half years and wanted to marry her. He had sent a marriage proposal to the 28-year-old victim's parents but they rejected it. Later, even the victim refused to marry her because she disliked his alcohol addiction.
Suicide attempt
That is when Khambe started harassing her both mentally and physically, which pushed her to attempt suicide. After spending a week at the hospital, she returned home last Friday when the accused visited her to check on her health. He had even taken a bottle of petrol with him.

A police officer said that taking advantage of the fact that she was alone at home, the accused poured the petrol on her and set her on fire. While she was burning and screaming for help, the accused stood at the door watching. That is when she ran towards the door, grabbed him and held on to him tightly.
Neighbours douse flames
The officer said that the accused tried his best to release himself but he couldn't and when both moved out of the house in that condition, neighbours rushed in to help and doused the flames. Then they took both of them to the nearest hospital.
Khambe sustained 90 per cent burns and died during treatment at JJ hospital. However, the victim is said to be in a critical condition.
Requesting anonymity, a police officer said, "On the complaint of the victim's brother, we registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC against the deceased. Further investigation is on."
