Mumbai: Man commits chain snatching to pay off mobile phone EMI; held

The MHB Police arrested a chain snatcher who allegedly snatched from elderly person to pay off the EMI of his mobile phone. The accused watched videos on social media for hours about how to do the snatching and then committed the offence, the police said on Friday,

The arrested accused has been identified as Rohitkumar Jaisawar (22).

According to the police sources, Jaisawar physically assaulted and snatched a gold chain from Pushpa Daglia (50), a resident of Dahisar west. On Wednesday evening, she was returning home at around 4:30 pm after giving tea to her husband and son in a shop closeby. Jaiswar came running from behind snatched her chain. When she resisted, Jaiswar forcibly pushed her to the ground and snatched her chain. He later fled from the spot. However, Dagalia immediately informed the MHB Police.

"Under the supervision of Police inspector Jaywant Mate, PSI Akhilesh Bombe and his staff Sandeep Parit and Satish Devkar caught the accused. The victim had given the suspects description to the police and the team traced the suspect and recovered the gold chain which was worth about Rs 50,000," said an officer from MHB police station.

During interrogation, Jaiswar said that money was needed to pay the EMI of his mobile phone and hence he had done the snatching.

He used to work as a loader with a company that is outsourced by the banks to load cash in the ATMs. He used to get a salary of Rs 12,000 which is not enough to run the house. Recently he had bought a mobile phone on the loan on EMI, he was paying the money but he did not have money to pay the next installment due to which he had committed this crime, the officer added.

The accused has no previous criminal record and was arrested. He was produced before the court on Thursday where the court remanded him to police custody till Saturday, said another officer.
