A wanted accused in a Delhi NDPS case died after falling off the third floor flat in Malad while trying to escape from the cops who had come knocking on his door on Tuesday afternoon. According to the Bangur Nagar police, they had received information from Janakpuri police station in Delhi about a wanted accused, identified as David Hari Roy, 48, who was wanted in an NDPS case since 2017 and was staying in Evershine Nagar. On Tuesday, a police team from Janakpuri police arrived in Mumbai and asked for help from the Bangur Nagar police to verify his residence.

The Janakpuri police team along with the Bangur Nagar police reached the flat but when they knocked on the door repeatedly they did not get any response. The officers said that the police team enquired with the neighbouring flats but no one seemed to be aware of him. As they were leaving the building and reached the gate of the society, a local resident told them that a man had fallen off the third floor. The officers went to the spot to find a man wearing a helmet lying in a pool of blood. When they removed the helmet they found that it was Roy and rushed him to Shatabdi hospital, Borivli. However, he died in the night, said an officer from Bangur Nagar police station.

"On examining the crime scene, we found that the iron grill of the window had been cut and a rope was tied to it, by which Roy was attempting to escape. But, the rope broke while Roy was climbing down. Further investigation revealed that Roy had been living alone and his wife, two kids and his parents were living in a separate flat in the same area. He was wanted since his name came up in the Janakpuri case. However, the police had come looking for him many times before, but there was no clue about him. His family members, too, were not in touch with him.

Yet he managed to dodge everyone and live in the Malad flat for the past many years. Even neighbours had no idea when he came and went. He had cut the iron grill on the window and tied a rope to it in such a way that if anyone came to catch him, he could escape through it quickly. The police have registered an accidental death case. "We have recorded the statements of the watchmen and the Delhi police officers and are investigating further to confirm whether the fall was accidental," said another police officer from Bangur Nagar police station.
