Mumbai crime: Two held for posing as cops, extorting money

Mumbai crime: The LT Marg police in south Mumbai arrested two individuals who allegedly posed as Mumbai Police officials and extorted money, claiming it was fines for alleged violations of the law.

According to the police, the incident came to light on October 20 when Jitendra Jain (28) stopped near a hotel situated on Shamaldas Gandhi Marg to smoke a cigarette. Two alleged impostors arrived on a motorcycle and informed Jain that smoking cigarettes in that area was prohibited. Subsequently, they demanded a Rs. 2000 fine from Jain, who complied. However, the accused failed to provide a receipt and quickly fled the scene.

Suresh Jadhav, a traffic police officer in the Kalbadevi division, was made aware of the incident and promptly reported it to the police station, leading to the registration of an FIR against the two suspects.

"After a technical investigation and with input from reliable sources, we apprehended both accused individuals, identified as Sujit Shinde (37) and Manoj Parab (30). Parab had a prior case registered against him in Borivali. Further investigation is ongoing," said LT Marg police station's Senior PI Dyaneshwar Wagh.

He also added, "Both the accused were in plain clothes at the time of the incident and were not in uniform."

According to the police, Shinde resides in Chunabhatti, while Parab is a resident of Borivali.

The duo has been booked under section 170 (Personating a Public Servant), 420 (Cheating), and other relevant sections of the IPC.
