The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a 25-year-old Govandi labourer for allegedly stealing a co-passenger's bag containing gold jewellery worth Rs 27 lakh from a platform at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT).

According to a report in Times of India, a GRP crime branch team tracked down accused Hasan Shaikh to Kalburgi in Karnataka after analysing the CCTV footage and ticket-booking records. The incident took place when victim Balaji Devendra and his family, all residents of Sion-Koliwada, were on their way for a wedding on May 3.

The family boarded S-11 coach of Coimbatore Express, however, upon checking their bags once again inside the train's bogey, they realised one bag which contained the gold jewellery was missing. After realising that the bag had been stolen from the platform, Devendra approached the Kurla GRP and lodged a complaint.

Meanwhile, the crime branch began a parallel investigation and scanned CCTV footage of the platform, where a man was captured picking up Devendra's bag beside his own one. As per the CCTV footage, the accused was also seen boarding another coach. After scanning CCTV of subsequent halts of Coimbatore Express, cops found the accused alighting at Kalburgi station.

Investigating officer Hemraj Sathe said, "We analysed ticket-booking records and narrowed down a list of passengers booked up to Kalburgi. Eight tickets were booked by a travel agent from Mumbai. We showed him footage of the theft and he identified Shaikh."

Following this, cops took Shaikh's number from the agent and tracked his phone's location to Karnataka's Kalburgi. He was arrested on Wednesday. "The jewellery has been recovered," senior inspector Shailendra Dhiwar said.
