The Kurar police have arrested a man for allegedly trying to kill his 13-year-old daughter and staging the death of his eight-year-old son in an attempt to get his wife to return from her native village.

Police said the accused, Ajay Gaud, 35, lives at Kurar Village, Malad. His brother (the complainant) Suchit Gaud told the police that Ajay is an alcoholic who used to assault his wife and kids.

Fed up of this, two years ago, Ajay's wife left him and went to her native village and never returned. On Sunday, Gaud called his wife and told her that their son had died and daughter had committed suicide and sent a picture of a body covered with a white bed sheet.

He then made his daughter climb on a bucket and put a noose, hanging from the ceiling fan, around her neck, said an officer. When he was forcibly trying to do so, the girl screamed saying she did not want to die. Hearing this, the neighbours gathered outside the house and broke open the door thinking the girl was being murdered.

The neighbours informed Suchit Gaud, who later contacted the Kurar police.

"We have arrested Gaud on charges of attempt to murder, assault and threatening of the Indian Penal Code," said Prakash Bele, senior police inspector of Kurar police station.
