Mumbai crime: In a rapid succession of operations, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully thwarted various attempts to smuggle narcotics in Mumbai, the officials said on Tuesday.

They said that the international drug syndicates' couriers attempted to smuggle cocaine into the country using various methods at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) Airport, Mumbai. In one case, the drugs were recovered from an Indian individual's residence in Virar after being smuggled from Nairobi via Delhi Airport.

Out of the four distinct cases in recent days, DRI apprehended two individuals in two cases who attempted to bring drugs into the country by concealing them in hidden compartments within their trolley bags. In the other two cases, the couriers had swallowed drug capsules and had to be admitted to JJ Hospital to extract the drug-laden capsules, the officials said.

In total, approximately 7kg of cocaine, valued at around Rs 70 crore in the illicit market, was seized by DRI officers. Four individuals, comprising three males and one female, were arrested in these cases. Two of the males are Indian nationals, while the other two are foreign nationals, they said.

In one of the cases, DRI officers also discovered an unlicensed firearm with live ammunition. The weapon has been handed over to the local police for further investigation, an official said.
