Mumbai Crime: 30-year-old woman held for duping elderly women of Rs 5 lakh

According to police sources, the accused woman has committed two offenses under the jurisdiction of Bangura Nagar police station in the past few months and committed similar offenses in other parts of Mumbai, including Bhandup.

A 30-year-old woman was arrested by Bangur Nagar police on Saturday for allegedly duping elderly women residing alone. The accused has been identified as Kavita Waghmare alias Kavita Khandare alias Kavita Naraynkar alia Savita.

Senior inspector Shobha Pise along with detection officer API Sujeet Kumar Gunjkar and his team arrested the accused after laying a trap.

According to police sources, the accused woman has committed two offenses under the jurisdiction of Bangura Nagar police station in the past few months and committed similar offenses in other parts of Mumbai, including Bhandup.

Last month, she committed two crimes in Bhagat Singh Nagar and both the victims were elderly women.

In the first case, she took gold jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh from an elderly woman by saying that her son owed her money. She even pretended to call the victim's son and asked for the jewellery.

In the second case, she took jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh from an elderly woman by saying that she is friends with her daughter-in-law, who had taken jewellery and cash from her but did not return.

After complaints were registered, the police got a sketch made of the accused and scanned footage of around 100 CCTVs from nearby localities.

"After receiving information about the residence of the accused, the police laid a trap and managed to catch her from Dharavi," said senior inspector Shobha Pise.

She was arrested under Sections 420 (cheating) and 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation) of the Indian Penal Code.

"During further interrogation, it was found out that she has committed similar crimes in Bhandup and many other areas across Mumbai," Pise added.

She was produced before the court and remanded to police custody.
