A 26-year-old mechanic was arrested recently for molesting and assaulting women on the Matunga flyover, said police.

As per Matunga police, the accused used to follow women on a motorcycle and touch them inappropriately, sometimes resulting in them falling off their two-wheeler. Then he used to speed away.

A 25-year-old woman complained to Matunga police on November 8, 2020, stating she was assaulted by an unidentified biker near Matunga police station twice in 15 days. She was assaulted in October while descending from Matunga flyover and was hit so badly that she lost control of her two-wheeler and fell. Similar incident occurred in November, after which she filed a complaint.

Matunga police started investigating and came across a biker racing away from the spot and going towards Pratiksha Nagar. After a few days, similar incident was reported under the jurisdiction of Sion police station, where a woman was molested by a biker while descending from Sion flyover. DCP (Zone 4) Vijay Patil then ordered both police stations to probe the incident jointly.

"We laid a trap from Dadar TT to Sion flyover every night from 10.30 pm to 12.30 am but couldn't spot the suspected biker. We had started this since December 2020 but were not getting any break until the night of January 17," said an officer from Matunga police station.

"On 17th night, cops noticed a biker trying to go near a woman rider. As he noticed the police, he tried to race away. We alerted policemen at Sion nakabandi and nabbed him" added the officer.

Police interrogated the suspect and it was found that he had molested 4 to 5 women in a similar manner. "The accused used to keep watch and target the women returning home late between 10.30 pm and 12.30 am. We believe he has some psychological issues," said Patil.

"He was arrested and is now in judicial custody," he added.
