The Gamdevi police have arrested a 49-year-old carpenter for allegedly making rape and death threats to a 32-year-old charted accountant after she refused his services.
According to police, Imtiyaz Ansari, a resident of Kurla, has committed the same offence at least 20 times. "There are similar cases registered against him across the city," an officer of Gamdevi police said.
During the investigation, the police learned that the accused took down numbers from hoardings/posters meant for the public, of doctors and other professionals. "He would dial the number and ask if they needed carpentry work. Some people agreed to take his services," the officer added.

Gamdevi police learned that some of those who agreed to take his services made advance payments, but he never delivered the product to them. "He would threaten those who did not make the advance payment. Some women have complained that he sent vulgar messages asking for sex," the officer said.
According to the FIR, there are cases registered against the accused in Bandra, Santacruz, Juhu, Sion, Borivli, Kandivli, Matunga and Versova too. Among the charges he faces are theft, extortion, cheating, stalking, insulting the modesty of women, criminal intimidation, etc.
