Maharashtra: Two booked for posting derogatory content on social media in Thane

The Thane Police in Maharashtra have registered a criminal case on Wednesday against two youths for allegedly posting derogatory content on social media with pictures of Tipu Sultan and Aurangzeb, police said, according to the PTI.

A Bhayandar police station official said that the duo has been identified based on their Instagram accounts but no arrest has been made so far, as per the PTI.

The FIR was registered on a complaint lodged by a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) functionary, he said quoting the First Information Report.

The case has been registered under sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, the official added, reported the PTI.

Meanwhile, in an another incident, the Thane Police have registered an FIR against seven women and a man under the SC/ST Atrocities Act for allegedly harassing a 34-year-old woman who earlier worked with the health department of Thane Zilla Parishad, an official said on Wednesday, reported the PTI.

As per the woman's complaint, she was subjected to the harassment between June 2021 to January 2023 when she worked at a primary health centre, panchayat samiti office in Bhiwandi and the Zilla Parishad's health department in Thane, the official from Narpoli police station said, according to the PTI.

Some of the accused allegedly refused to do the work assigned to them by the complainant, belonging to Warli community, saying they will not take orders from her as she was from a "lower caste", according to the FIR, reported the news agency.

They also allegedly abused her when when she once drank water from their bottle, it said.

Some of the accused persons also abused and humiliated her in front of other employees over her caste. They also allegedly made "false" complaints against her, following which she was removed from the job, the FIR said.

The victim also stated that after losing her job, she went to her village in Mokhada taluka of neighbouring Palghar district and did farming.

Based on the complaint, the police on Tuesday registered the FIR against the eight accused, including a child development officer, under provisions of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the official said, the PTI reported.
