A 41-year-old man from Thane district was killed allegedly by unidentified persons following a quarrel in Kalyan area, police said on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.
The incident took place on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday when the victim was attacked with sharp weapons behind a petrol pump in Adivali locality, an official from Manpada police station in Kalyan division said, reported PTI.
The victim informed his son earlier on Tuesday that he intended to start a roadside food stall with the assistance of his friends.
Late at night, the son received a call from his father's mobile number, with the caller informing that the latter was rushed to a hospital following an accident, reported PTI.

According to the police, the man from Thane district succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital.
The victim's son got to know from the police that his father was involved in a quarrel with someone, which possibly led to his killing, as per the FIR registered in connection with the incident, reported PTI.
Some weeks back, the victim approached the police with a complaint regarding a dispute he had with some individuals. The police then registered a non-cognisable offence, the FIR said, reported PTI.
The Manpada police have sent the body to a government hospital for post-mortem.
Based on his son's complaint, the police registered the case against unidentified persons under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the official said, adding that a probe was on into the incident, reported PTI.
In another incident, police have registered a case against man from Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly molesting his 12-year-old daughter, an official said on Thursday, reported PTI.
The victim, a student of Class 5, resided with her parents in Ambernath area, reported PTI.
On January 15 and 22, the 40-year-old Thane man allegedly molested his daughter while she was asleep and later threatened her with dire consequences if she informed about it to anyone, the official from Kulgaon police station said, reported PTI.
The victim informed about the offence to her mother, who subsequently filed a police complaint, reported PTI.
The police on Wednesday registered a case against the Thane man under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the official said, reported PTI. A probe was on into the case.
