Constable Vikrant Vedant held the accused even after being sprayed and called for back-up
Even after being blinded by chilli spray, a 32-year-old constable from Kurar police station managed to arrest a robber on the first day of the year. The arrested accused is part of a gang of four who were allegedly out to rob liquor shops in Kurar, said sources.
The incident took place on the night of January 1. In view of the restrictions imposed in the city during the new years, police patrolling and blockades were ordered to maintain law and order and crack down on criminals and violators.
Vikrant Vedant, a constable attached to the Kurar police station who was on patrolling duty, saw an auto with men who seemed suspicious. Vedant stopped the auto to enquire with them, but three of the four passengers along with the driver managed to flee while the cop caught hold of the fifth person.
"As soon as Vedant stopped the auto rickshaw, four men including the rickshaw driver fled the spot. Vedant did not waste a second and grabbed the fifth one. The accused then attacked Vedant with red chilli spray, blinding him," said a police officer.

Vedant, however, did not let the accused go and screamed for back up. Hearing his voice, other officers reached the spot, nabbed the accused and took Vedant to a hospital.
During the search, several weapons like chopper, knife, rope, and rods were recovered from the back seat of the auto. The accused was later identified as Harun Sardar, 35, who has more than 70 house break-in and burglary cases filed against him.
The accused, during interrogation, told the police that the gang had robbed a wine shop in Kurar a few days ago as well. He also led the police to another accused, Jialal Diwakar, 24, who has been arrested.
A police officer said the gang was targeting liquor shops now due to the boost in liquor sales during the new year. "We have arrested the duo under various sections of the IPC. We are on the lookout for the other accomplices," said a police officer.
