Police have apprehended six minors and arrested two men who stole mobile phones. As many as 75 handsets, including iPhones, worth over Rs 6 lakh in total, were recovered from them.
The gang operated in suburban Malad area and had nine cases registered against its members at Dindoshi police station, said a police official. The gang members struck at night, targeting drivers of app-based cabs, robbing them of phones at knife-point. On Saturday night a police patrolling team spotted four minors robbing a cab driver near Oberoi Mall in Goregaon East and apprehended them.
It led to rounding up of others, said deputy commissioner of police Vinaykumar Rathod. Mubarak Kharojiya (20), a shop owner who purchased stolen handsets and resold them, and Shahabuddin Mansuri, who was part of the gang, were arrested last night.
They were booked under sections 395 (dacoity), 506 (criminal intimidation) and other relevant sections of the IPC. The six minors were sent to a juvenile correctional home, while Kharojiya and Mansuri were remanded in police custody till August 10 by a court. Further probe is on.
