Hours after registering an FIR in a connection with Bulli Bai app case where prominent muslim women were being "auctioned", the Cyber Cell of Mumbai Crime Branch detained a 21-year-old engineer from Bengaluru on Monday evening. Cops suspect that the accused is the mastermind behind the Bulli Bai app. "The person has been detained for enquiry," Mumbai Joint Commissioner (Crime) Milind Bharambe told mid-day. The police have, however, not revealed the identity of the 21-year-old as he has not been arrested in the case yet. He has been brought to Mumbai by cyber police for further interrogation.
Cyber cell DCP Rashmi Karandikar, who is known for cracking most difficult cyber cases specially cases of online abuse against women, is heading the investigation in the case. During preliminary enquiry, police found that the accused was a second-year civil engineering student and his father is believed to be a government servant. Cops suspect that the student may have created the app as well as Twitter handles used to post the derogatory comments.
After registering the FIR, the Mumbai police reached out to Twitter to get the details of the Twitter handle. "Our teams worked on it thoroughly since the offence was registered. And cyber abuse against women is always treated on priority," an officer said.

"The Mumbai police have done a brilliant jobâ¦I would say that political will was there to solve the case registered in Mumbai, so the case has been cracked. I had followed all legal procedures when I was targeted during Sulli Deals six months ago. I made several rounds of the police station to know if there was any development in my case but it was always disappointingâ¦If Mumbai police can trace the criminal and bring them to justice within 24 hours, why not the Delhi police?" said Hasiba Amin, who was targeted by the app. Hana Mohsin Khan, a commercial pilot who registered a case with Noida police last year, said, "I am so happy to know that the case has been solved."
