A 20-year-old man, with his leg chopped off, was found dead on Monday night in Punjab. Six people have been charged in the murder case, and all belong to his village in Mansa district, which is nearly 180 km away from capital Chandigarh.

According to media reports, the deceased, identified as Sukhchain Singh Pali, was involved in liquor smuggling and was brutally murdered by the members of a rival gang. It is being said that there were a number of clashes between the two gangs in recent times.

The family of the deceased is however alleging that Sukhchain was killed because he was a Dalit. They have event refused to cremate the body, and have said that they will do so only after his missing leg is found and the accused, who are upper caste people according to them are nabbed.

An FIR has been filed in the case following a complaint by Sukhchain's father Resham Singh. Politicians in the village, meanwhile, staged a protest, alleging that Dalits are being harassed.

Not the first case
Late last year Bheem Taank, also a Dalit, was found dead with his hand, leg chopped off.
