An inmate at Yerawada Central Jail died after another inmate, who is serving life imprisonment, allegedly smashed his head with a stone.
The deceased, identified as Sukhdev Meghraj Meha-kaarkar, 43, hails from Vilad village in Ahmednagar and was writing a letter to his family when the incident happened. Constable Baban Khandu Taake, 50, has filed a case of murder (302) at the Yerawada police station against Dinesh Suresh Dabade, 35, from Mumbai.
"Eight days ago, Mehakaarkar had accidentally spilled dirty water on Dabade while working in the kitchen. The two had fought over it. On Saturday around 10.50 am, a few inmates, including Mehakaarkar were writing letters. Dabade picked up a stone kept outside the barrack and smashed it on his head. The impact was such that his brain came out. We are inspecting CCTV footage for more details," an officer told mid-day.
Senior inspector of Yerawada police station, Ashok Kadam said, "To arrest Dabade, we have to take permission from the judiciary and home departments."
