The Pimpri police interrupted the pre-marriage ceremony of a 14-yr-old girl on Saturday after receiving a tip-off from an NGO.

The Pimpri police on Saturday arrested the girl's parents who were allegedly marrying her off to a boy from Karnataka.

The accused have been identified as Vanita and Shrimant Shravan Saakle, residents of Gandhinagar slum in Pimpri.

The boy's father Gajanan Daundmani, resident of Bagalkot district in Karnataka, has also been charged. The perpetrators have been held under sections of the Prevention of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

Police Sub-Inspector P R Zanjurne from Pimpri police station said, "We got information from an activist from an NGO about the minor's marriage.

We immediately rushed to the spot and stopped the pre-marriage ceremony. Most of the rituals were completed by then and the family was about to leave for Karnataka where, the girl and the boy were going to marry each other today."

The girl is a standard IX student. Her parents were aware that child marriage is illegal but still decided to go ahead with it, the cops said.

The accused have been booked under sections 9, 10 and 11 of the Child Marriage Prevention act 2006," PSI Zanjurne said.
