In a shocking incident, an aged woman and her son were shot dead in broad daylight in a Meerut village in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, police said. The assailants pumped eight bullets in less than a minute into the woman who was seated outside her house with another woman.

The incident has been caught on CCTV and the brazenness of the attackers has left the police and the state government red faced.

The incident took place in Sorkha village. Police said prima facie the uncle of the deceased was the main suspect as he had animosity with the family over a land dispute.

The dead were identified as Nichattar Kaur and Balwinder.

The assailants came on a motorcycle and after killing the two fled on foot, leaving behind their bike.

Police officials said the deceased were to testify in a court soon in a murder case of 2016.

The suspects had warned the woman and her son not to testify in the court, failing which they would be killed.

Additional Director General of Police Anand Kumar said one of the accused had been arrested. Four policemen, including the Station House Officer of Partapur, had been suspended for "administrative lapses".
