An army cadet in Pune was duped to the tune of Rs 23,000 by a Jharkhand-resident after he was promised a mobile phone on an online buying-selling website. The complainant, Anandi Anand (17), lodged a complaint on August 30 at Samarth police station, against one suspect, identified as Deepak, from Jharkhand.
According to the investigating officer, Police Sub Inspector V L Chavan, Anand is an army cadet who moved to Pune from Samastipur, Bihar in March. He visited a reputed website olx.com, on August 26, looking to buy a second-hand phone where he came across an advertisement posted by the accused, looking to sell a Sony mobile phone.
After the complainant contacted him, he was asked to deposit Rs 23,000 in Somwar Peth branch of Corporation Bank in the account of one Neha Goswami. He deposited the amount on August 27, and waited for the delivery of the handset from Jharkhand. The accused had assured him he would receive the mobile phone in the next couple of days.
However, after the phone was not delivered, Anand started calling Deepak, but the man on the other line claimed it was the wrong number.
After getting no response for several days, Anand approached the police on Saturday and registered an FIR against the accused.
The suspect has been charged under section 420 (punishment for cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and cops are currently investigating about Deepak and the account-holder in Pune.
