The traffic cops have been monitoring select locations across the city
Stepping up action against bikers driving rashly and speeding at night, the Mumbai Traffic Police arrested 54 people and seized 51 motorcycles at Bandra, Worli and Santacruz areas on Sunday night. The drive, as part of which the CCTV control room of the traffic police was monitoring select locations across the city, started at 11 pm and continued till 3 am.
On Sunday night, under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police, Praveen Padwal and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nandkumar Thakur, the traffic cops set up tight security in Haji Ali, Worli, Bandra, Vakola and Santacruz areas. Padwal was keeping a close watch on the bikers through the control room and was also present on road when some of the actions were being taken.
Around 1 am, 12 motorcyclists were spotted heading towards Worli from Haji Ali on the CCTV cameras. Padwal immediately informed the special squad of the traffic police and upon their arrival at Worli, the 12 were arrested and charged under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the IPC.

Similarly, eight motorcycles were seized in Mahim after a case was registered and 28 motorcycles were seized in Bandra after two cases were registered. The traffic cops in Vakola, Vile Parle and Santa Cruz also filed charges against rash drivers.
Requesting anonymity, a traffic cop told mid-day, "Most of the bikers who were found driving rashly are between 19 to 25 years of age. Their parents will be informed about it."
Yashasvi Yadav, joint commissioner of Traffic Police, said, "The traffic police's drive to take action against bikers who drive rashly and perform stunts on road will continue for the next two weeks."
"We will also go through the CCTV footage of the past six months and register a case against all those found driving rashly under section 279 of the IPC," Yadav added.
