The 16th edition of the IAAF Gold Label Tata Mumbai Marathon was flagged off by brand ambassador and six-time world champion Mary Kom. More than 46,000 runners took to the streets of Mumbai to participate in the Tata Mumbai Marathon.

The richest marathon in India with a prize pool worth USD 405,000, the event has six different race categories - Full Marathon (42.195 kms), Half Marathon (21.097 kms), Senior Citizens Race (4.7 km), Dream Run (6.6 km), Champions with Disability category (2.1 km) and a newly added edition Open 10K run. Just before the flag off of the marquee race, Indian supermodel and fitness icon Milind Soman was also spotted with his wife Ankita Konwar at the starting line of the Tata Mumbai Marathon. Politician and Mumbai NCP President Sachin Ahir also graced the flagging off evet of the Tata Mumbai Marathon. The 16th edition of the IAAF Gold Label Tata Mumbai Marathon race day was streamed live on Star Sports 1, Star Sports HD 1 and Hotstar from 7.00 am to 11.30 am. The Tata Mumbai Marathon saw elite runners - Indian and International taking center stage. Besides the elite runners, the event witnessed over 46,000 participants from amateurs to fitness lovers, business typhoons to Bollywood celebrities taking to the streets of Mumbai on this day. In the 16th edition of the TMM, 8414 runners participated in the full marathon (42.195km), which is a 22 per cent increase compared to the last edition.

The marathon started opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Terminus and ran across many of the city's classical locations such as Flora Fountain, Chowpatty, Marine Drive, Haji Ali, Mahim Church, and of course the very majestic Bandra-Worli Sea link. Pic credit/ Twitter Tata Mumbai Marathon

The initial part of the elite men's category of full marathon saw Kenyan runners dominate their counterparts. But slowly and gradually as the pack of elite runners moved towards Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSl), Ethiopia's Aychew Bantie, bib no 5 took over the Kenyan runners after 16 kms of the run. Soon, it was a game of chess in the elite men's category as the lead changed from Kenyan to Ethiopian runners and vice versa. After 34 kms of the run, it was Kenya's sprinter Cosmas Lagat who was miles ahead of the rest. He continued his dominance and maintained his lead and took away the glory by winning the men's elite category with a timing of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 15 seconds, which is the second-best in the 16-year history of the race. Soon after Cosmas Lagat's victory, it was Indian speedster Nitendra a Singh Rawat who thronged to victory in the Indian elite men's category. Rawat, who won the Mumbai Marathon in 2016 and was a course record holder in the Indian Men's Elite field bounced back in style at the 16th edition of the IAAF Gold Label Tata Mumbai Marathon by winning the elite Indian Men's race. Bib no.106, Worknesh Alemu of Ethiopia won the Elite Women category race as she managed to crack timing of 2 hours 25minutes and 45 seconds. Indian Olympic athlete Sudha Singh left her compatriots behind in the Indian Women category as she hit the home stretch! At the 16th edition of IAAF Gold Label, Tata Mumbai Marathon Sudha Singh aimed to emulate Lalita Pawar's feat of becoming thrice winner of the Mumbai marathon. Pawar had won in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Sudha is defending champion and has won twice before. Sudha won in 2017, 2018 and winning this year's Indian women category comes as an icing on the cake as she successfully qualified for the World Athletics Championships to be held in Doha (Qatar). Susha clocked a personal best timing of 2 hours 34 minutes and 56 seconds at the Tata Mumbai Marathon.

Bollywood actress and host of The Tara Sharma Show, Tara Sharma Saluja took to Twitter to share her pre-morning routine before the start of the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2019. Chef, Television host and Entrepreneur Saransh Goila took to Twitter to share the joy of running the Tata Mumbai Marathon as he posted a picture with his medal and bare feet.
