Swapnokalpa Dasgupta says online classes foster community
Globally, April 29 is dedicated to celebrating dance and to encourage participation in various dance forms. During the lockdown, many city-based instructors have observed an increase in participation, as online classes have made dance more accessible than ever before. Even if you've never donned your dancing shoes before, they make a strong case about why you should try to shake a leg at the next available opportunity.

"Dancing improves your mobility, strengthens your joints and offers cardiovascular benefits," says Shefali Kothari, an urban and jazz instructor. It is also a stress-buster as the physical act of dancing can trigger the release of endorphins that elevate your mood. Dancing also improves your confidence and sense of body image. Additionally, Swapnokalpa Dasgupta, an Odissi exponent, instructor, and head of dance at the NCPA, points out that dancing, especially Indian classical and folk dances, builds a sense of community. "Many of our Indian dances are designed to be performed in groups. The choreography and themes allow you to transcend your physical space," she shares. The relationship between teacher and student is also a very special one, she adds, as the exchange of ideas and information is bi-lateral and enriching for both.

Apeksha Bhattacharyya, founder of the Indian Academy of Russian Ballet, says that contrary to popular belief, even very technical dances such as ballet can be learned at an older age. "I began learning classical ballet at the age of 20 and have since learned enough to be an accredited teacher. Over time and with a disciplined approach, you can develop the necessary strength and flexibility to perform complex routines regardless of your age," she signs off.
