Kanan Gill
There is a seminal album by American alt-rockers The Strokes, called Is This It. The title track has a long-drawn drawl where Julian Casablancas, the band's lead singer, makes the phrase seem like a truly existential question. It revived rock music at a time when it seemed down and out, in circa 2001. But this weekend, things will take a less serious turn. We are at a point in time after two years when we can head out of home for a comedy venue and laugh freely, an opportunity that will arise when Kanan Gill takes the stage at a SoBo auditorium. "Have you ever looked around at your life and thought, is this it? That's what it's about," Gill's description of the set reads.
Is this it? That's the operative question. The answer is subjective. The Strokes made it seem as if nothing matters anyway. But Gill will probably have a different take. He's one of the early starters in the country's comedy circuit. But like every one of his compatriots, he's been largely deprived of the chance to perform to an audience. That will change this weekend. But remember the central question if you do attend. Is this it?
