Trading in a glamorous updo for simple pigtails at the recent Golden Globes, director Chloe Zhao highlighted the lasting allure of fuss-free braids. This style, just like the ubiquitous messy buns, is a great solution for days when your hair lies too flat or is in desperate need of a wash, says makeup artist Natasha Nyss. She shares simple tips for getting it right.

Chloe Zhao's pigtails at the Golden Globes were quite the talking point

Tight versus loose
While loose voluminous braids look more glamorous, tight pigtails can have a lifting effect on your face, Nyss points out. For a tighter style, flat iron your hair and begin braiding higher, drawing in section of hair from above your ears. Conversely, curl and tease your hair for more volume for looser, fuller pigtails and use a generous amount of hair spray to hold the braids in place.

Change it up
This staple lends itself well to French or herringbone braids. You could also pin your pigtails up around your head for a Dutch braided style. If you're feeling experimental, try your hand at pigtail space buns, Nyss suggests.

Finishing touches
Conceal the elastics you're using to secure your braids with a few hair strands. You could dress up your pigtails by braiding it in a ribbon or using small charms.
