A new gig series aims to place untapped independent artistes on the same stage as bigger acts

Music fans might have been in a situation where they are keen on listening to a band but the idea of shelling out a hefty cover charge plus the booze bill tends to make them call off the idea. With it begins the scramble to enter the much-coveted guest lists, and sneak in for free.

A new gig series, No Guest List, programmed by Karan Yadav and Prasad Iyer aims to put an end to this. "We aim to promote new talent and bring back established names who haven't performed in a while. For the first session, alternative rock bands TORt and Gumbal, will get a chance to play with known rock band Blakc, who has done over 200 shows across the country," informs Yadav. Also performing for the night will be Siddharth Basrur, who will debut his new solo project Runt.

"In Mumbai, the main issue is that big acts come with a guest list, and the opening acts get sidetracked. Bands choose to perform at larger spaces with the belief that they will get a larger audience. But often, regardless of the venue, artistes are unable to reach out to the right crowd. At indie music fests abroad, you can bring your barbeque and picnic with your family. You bring your party with you," says Balraj Singh Ghai, founder of The Habitat, the venue for the night. Ghai has hosted various BYOB gigs in the past with bands like The Lightyears Explode. "The idea is to tap as many indie artistes as possible, where patrons don't think about the money spent," Ghai signs off.
