Attend a gig that shines the spotlight on emerging acts
Talented young indie bands are often like a book you're looking for at a second-hand store - they might be around, but it's difficult to find them. You can't blame these musicians though, since venues usually feel safer banking on more established names.
Siddhartho Poddar
Generation WHY is a gig series that aims to alter this situation by giving upcoming bands a mainstream stage. It returns this weekend for its sixth edition and will feature fingerstyle guitarist Siddhartho Poddar, hip-hop exponents Microphone and mellow rockers Unohu.
We ask Aftab Khan, the 24-year-old brains behind Generation WHY, what young bands can do to find more relevance and he says, "Audiences need to be educated, but musicians, too, need to figure out how to reach more people that may like their kind of music. There are platforms like the Internet, print media and TV, and bands need to use them all to make their presence felt."
Poddar points out, "With the number of bands coming up now, it's becoming harder and harder to get people's attention. And attention is today's currency -- if you get it, then you're in the game."
