A masterclass aims to introduce kids to the art of lyric-writing

Participants will study songs like Hakuna matata from The Lion King

From nursery rhymes to tracks from The Sound of Music and Disney movies, songs are an integral part of our childhood. The basis of this universal language of music, shares Deonar resident Richa Sethi, lies in the poetry behind the lyrics, which children can use to express themselves creatively. And this is exactly what Sethi, founder of the social community GetLitt!, is inviting kids to do through an upcoming workshop on writing lyrics.

The virtual platform is dedicated to making stories accessible to children and encouraging them to tell their own. The five-day workshop is aimed at students of classes 4 to 8. In the first part, they will look at the history of music and learn to actually listen to songs, rather than just hearing them. Then, Sethi says, they'll learn to identify the rhythm of a song, what kind of story is being told through it, and which emotions it triggers in their minds.

"We'll go through tracks such as Hakuna matata, I'll be there for you, songs from other Disney movies, and nursery rhymes, too. Participants will also be introduced to figures of speech," she explains.

Simultaneously, the students will be allotted exercises to aid them in writing their own lyrics. "They'll learn to convey emotions through songs. In a previous edition, we had kids writing lyrics for their grandparents, too," Sethi signs off.
