For eco-friendly pet parents, these home-grown start-ups that focus on sustainable, organic products may be the way forward

In the midst of the lockdown last year, the Shivaji Nagar-based duo Anuja Parikh and Rupa Sengupta decided to convert their love for eco-friendly and high-quality pet products into their business venture. "We've always been very conscious about the products we use. Personally, as a diver and a nature lover, I've always looked for ways to be more environmentally minded and reduce waste. My partner Rupa and I are parents to two seven-year-old collies and have been constantly on the lookout for the right shampoo and conditioner to improve the quality of their coats. We decided to use this research to benefit other pet parents as well," says Parikh of her year-old venture named The Modern Tail.

The platform offers a concise array of shampoo bars and conditioners, which include a neem and citronella combination to repel ticks and fleas, and Soothe Criminal, a tamanu oil and olive oil combination that is designed for dogs and cats with sensitive and allergy-prone skin. "A lot of people don't realise the importance of conditioning your pets' fur in ensuring the smoothest, healthiest coat. We recommend that a shampoo always be used in conjunction with the conditioner," Parikh adds. The grooming products are sold in bars to ensure more washes per purchase - the founders claim that an 80-gm bar is good for 30 washes for a medium-sized dog. The bars are stored in reusable aluminium tins and are travel-friendly. They also offer a Boo-Boo Balm to treat minor nicks and scrapes on dogs.
