When pop-star Billie Eilish traded in her signature green-black locks for a platinum mane, fans were instantly curious about how she'd managed to pull it off without damaging her hair. The white blonde shade she chose is the most difficult to achieve especially on darker hair, and involves extensive processing. Dr Ameesha Mahajan, dermatologist at RM Aesthetics, shares how you can achieve your blonde ambitions, without over-stressing your hair.

No DIY: "The process of bleaching is inherently damaging, as you are opening the cuticles and oxidising the melanin," Dr Mahajan says. She advises against DIY bleaching kits. In sight of the current limitations, she recommends waiting until the salons reopen to bleach your hair.

Spread it out: While Eilish lightened her hair over a duration of six weeks, Dr Mahajan says that Indian hair requires multiple sittings since the hair must be lightened by several levels. "Aim to lighten by two or three shades in every sitting. Use a sulphate-free hydrating shampoo for coloured hair," she adds.

Strengthen your strands: Follow a regular hydrating routine that comprises a conditioner, serum and masque. Nourish your stands with hair vitamin supplements. Keep heat treatments to a minimum and always use a heat-protecting spray. Keratin treatments add shine post colouring.
